With 470+ recipes, 10 week meal plan and heaps of cool bonus material, Paleo Grubs markets itself as the best selling Paleo cookbook of 2015/16. Does it live up to the hype? Find out below with my full review complete with pro’s, con’s and overall verdict.
Wait, What’s Paleo!? If you’re new to The Paleo lifestyle, here’s a quick recap: Sometimes referred to as the ‘caveman diet’, Paleo does away with grains, legumes, wheat and processed foods in favor of natural, ‘whole’ foods found in nature. If our paleolithic ancestors couldn’t catch it in the wild or dig it up out of the ground, it’s not included.
Paleo Grubs continues this eating lifestyle with a comprehensive recipe book divided into 17 different categories filled with easy-to-prepare Paleo recipes. And while the diet itself is great for just about anyone, it’s particular suited to those looking to lose weight, increase lean muscle, boost energy/vitality levels, reduce inflammation and manage health conditions including colitis, Crohn’s disease, gluten intolerance/sensitivity, leaky gut syndrome and auto-immune disorders.
Paleo Grubs: The Pro’s
Great Selection: You would think with Paleo’s embargo on wheat, grains and processed foods that the recipes would be somewhat limiting and bland, but you’d be wrong. There’s an excellent variety of foods and easy-to-prepare recipes to choose from. Over 470, in fact. These include desserts, too – great news if you’re like me and have a sweet-tooth, but also want to watch your waistline! All the recipes are made from natural, wholesome ingredients, so it felt good knowing what I was eating didn’t just taste good, it was good for me.
10 Week Meal Plan: Following the recipe book is all fine and dandy, but putting everything together to form a healthy, sustainable meal plan can be tricky. Having the whole process laid out in front of me, giving me breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and snacks was invaluable and made eating right (much) more manageable. Having the plan is an excellent addition and helps turn Paleo Grubs from just a recipe book into a full-blown action plan, giving the whole package more a lot more ‘Oomph!’.
Slick Presentation: Crisp pictures and a clean, easy-to-read layout and are both big factors for me. I’ve seen and read other recipe/cookbooks that were just mountains of text and while the recipes themselves were good, they rarely enticed me. I’m happy to report I had no such troubles with Paleo Grubs. The pictures accompanying the instructions show what you’re making, how it should look *hopefully!* and often had me salivating in anticipation – just the way it should be! Collectively, the bright colors and clear instructions all helped make the meal-prep and cooking process fun and enjoyable.
All Digital: When you buy Paleo Grubs, everything you receive is downloadable (PDF) which you then view and access on your computer, tablet or iPad. This is a niche change from hard-back cookbooks which can be cumbersome and heavy. Having this freedom means you can use Paleo Grubs anytime, anywhere. Of course, you can print out any page(s), if needed.
Paleo-Power: Paleo isn’t just another gimmick diet, it holds real sway in the scientific community and has generated a large base of followers and supporters worldwide. It’s meteoric rise is no coincidence. A diet which focuses on veggies, fruits, grass-fed lean meats and other non-processed foods is healthy and can deliver fantastic health benefits, including weight loss, improved lipid profile and increased insulin sensitivity – and if that’s not enough to get you excited, I don’t know what is!
60-Day Free Trial: If you’re still on the fence about trying the program, this is a great incentive. It also shows that the authors have faith in their product and aren’t just out to make a quick buck.
Paleo Grubs: The Con’s
Shock to the System: Depending on how attached you are to chips, burgers, lollies and cakes, saying goodbye to your favorite carbs can be tough, especially if you’re just getting started. However, it’s important to remember that this is true of any change to your normal routine, so don’t become discouraged if it takes a little time to adjust. Of course, exactly how closely you chose to follow a Paleo lifestyle is entirely up to you
